Love thy neighbour as yourself
Could we ever have dreamed that millions of people would have died over the past year? Could we ever have imagined how many people would suffer and how many people would be grieving in one year alone? That the entire world would be searching for a cure and that countries that would compete for wealth and power would suddenly be working together to find a cure for the sickness of this century.
We cannot see the future to prevent such a catastrophe but now that we know what the virus does and the vaccines can prevent us from dying or spreading the virus, we can be prepared better.
It’s a decision we all need to make for ourselves but actually there should be a mandate that all should take it to protect us and others. There is a small vulnerable group that cannot take the vaccine and to protect them against becoming sick the larger population should really be responsible in taking the preventative measures.
I am writing these thoughts down because the numbers of infections and deaths are rising again and the second surge of hospitalization is sweeping through countries that have access to the vaccine but don’t take it.
It’s all very clear to me but then there are some individuals that believe that the vaccine is not safe and that it was made from stem cells of a fetus and that it’s unethical to do that. My medical knowledge is not very deep but my logic says that if vaccines such as the measles and rubella as well as polio and small pocks were not given to kids, so many more would have died. The vaccines gave the children a chance to survive.
This post is for the people who have decided not to immunize. They are the once who will have to carry the conscience of so many people dying and I want to explain why it’s really hard to live with regret.
They are the ones that need to think twice if this is about others or all about themselves. If the Bible says we should love our Neighbour as ourselves this is the best examples where we will not only do ourselves a favor but also the entire population of people we will have contact with in future, including our children.
If we know there is an enemy out there that will kill us and our children and our neighbours? Won’t we do everything to protect ourselves? From security fences, windows and security guards.
Would you rather be prepared than carry the death of your loved ones on your conscience? My mother was murdered because a young man broke into her house. It’s nine years ago and I still wonder how I could have prevented the break-in. Should I have insisted that she would stay with me? Should we have sold the house and bought her a smaller house in a security village? Should she have kept her dog? These questions come and go and even if I believe that she is in a better place I wish she had not gone the way she did. Regret can never be wiped away.
If I do not write this down and warn people to take the precaution to look after their health and the health of others it will lie on my heart forever.
During the AIDS pandemic I went to work as a missionary at a radio station. I could not bear the thought that so many people would die and they still needed to hear the word of God.
I do not know how many were saved by my work but we touched the lives of many by the Bible studies, through radio media and telephone counseling.
It was the hardest time of my life with a sick husband and two beautiful children to care for but the Lord blessed me to understand the hardship of others and giving the gift of life to others is a blessing to them and us.
If my plea reaches death ears I cannot change that but maybe something of this plea has touched your heart and mind and you will take the vaccine as precautions to be safe and taking the safety of others in account too.
Lord we pray today that you will give us eyes to see the truth and the logic to understand and the love to care for us and others in these complicated times.
"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. ... And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself" (22:37-39).
