Philosophies of life

This week I read a text that said: “God doesn’t believe in atheists.” Usually it’s the other way around where the atheist says” I don’t believe in God.”

This is such a different outlook. Something I have never thought about because to me it’s quite crazy not to believe in God the creator of all living things. There is no way that all just evolved out of one cell over millions of years. How can a person with a brilliant mind and body just evolve from nowhere? I have no question that all living organisms have been created by an intelligence larger than we can understand and that this intelligence has a heart and is love and light, I call him God the father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit. This is my opinion and experience. However there are many more people in this world who believe in God in many different ways. Some say  He is in plants and trees. Some say He is an old man with a long beard, some say He is light and energy and some say - He does not exist. It’s all by chance that we are.

This is a topic one can talk about for hours and not agree upon. Wars have been fought about religious opinions and philosophies. Many people have even been killed because of their faith. So why is it so hugely important that you know what you believe and why?

The first reason is vision -that you can explain to yourself and others what you believe in and where your life is taking you. Is your life ending when you are dead? Or do you live on in a spiritual form? It’s good to think about the bigger picture. Some people say there is no bigger picture. You need to live for this day another may never come, but Martin Luther says even if you know that tomorrow is the end of the world, still plant an apple tree and keep hope.

This takes us to the next reason to know what and why we believe, is purpose-to have faith in God is that we do not feel lost and know that his plans are perfect for our lives. We may not see it yet,  but one day when we enter the gates of heaven we will understand it all. I cannot actually wait to dance in the heavenly grass and sing in the heavenly choirs.

The last and most important reason for knowing what we believe is belonging and identity.  This includes that  we need to know that we are God’s children and that we are loved not only by friends and family but mostly by God. All people have a longing for love and belonging. God loves us so much that he sacrificed his son to save us from eternal death. With this knowledge, every day is easier. We can see the hand of God in our lives if we  keep our eyes open for Him. Life is not easy. But we know that He loves us so much that he will pick us up and carry us through the storm.

So let’s take a few minutes to think through the concept of God’s existence and why we are created. This includes all humankind, even atheists.
